The first broadcast in Canada took place on March 3, 2013 on History Television. Until May 2014, two seasons were fully shown in Canada; the broadcast of the third season began on 19 February 2015. Just over a month later, the production of a fourth season was announced, which includes 20 episodes and since February 2016 is broadcast. In March 2016, the station extended the series by a fifth season with 20 episodes, which aired on 29 November 2017. In September 2017, a sixth season with another 20 episodes was announced in the lead actress Katheryn Winnick directed for the first time.

The plot is located at the beginning of the Viking Age in the early Middle Ages, but without any claim to historical accuracy. The focus is on the story of the Viking Ragnar Lothbrok, whose figure is based on Ragnar Lodbrok, a hero figure of the Nordic Sagal literature. Another main character is the shield maiden Lagertha, whose role model is the warrior Lathgertha from the Gesta Danorum of Saxo Grammaticus, here and there the first wife of Ragnar.
Among other things, the series focuses on the first Viking journeys and the subsequent military conflicts in England, various customs and customs (eg human sacrifice, northern Germanic religion, Norse mythology) as well as political power struggles. The series also deals with the encounter of the Vikings with Christianity and the effects of the Christianization of Scandinavia.
In early 2012, the Canadian television channel History Television announced that it would produce its first self-produced television series. They ordered the series Vikings with a budget of 40 million US dollars.
At the end of May 2012, the first roles were awarded. Gabriel Byrne, Clive Standen, Jessalyn Gilsig and Travis Fimmel were cast for the lead roles. The first filming began in July 2012 in the Irish Ashford Studios and with outdoor shots on Luggala, a mountain in the Wicklow Mountains.
For the second season, Alexander Ludwig and Linus Roache were cast for new lead roles. Ludwig takes on the role of adolescent Bjorn Lodbrok and Roache plays King Egbert von Wessex.
