The Walking Dead Plot
So far, the Walking Dead has mainly been in the metropolitan area of Atlanta, Georgia, and tells the story of a small group of survivors after a worldwide zombie apocalypse. Under the leadership of Deputy Sheriff Rick Grimes, the group is looking for a permanent and safe shelter. The almost undetected undead, group-internally referred to as biter or stray (English "Biters" and "Walkers") represents a constant threat that can strike at any time without warning. As a result of various deaths, new and new entrants, the size and constellation of the group are constantly changing. Over time, the more stable core of the group grows together emotionally and sees itself as a family alliance, in which everyone is willing to sacrifice his own life for the sake of the other if necessary. Searching for a safe place leads the survivors through zombie-infested towns and forests, highways, military facilities and secret research facilities. Everywhere the group came, the plague has already raged and turned almost all humans into zombies. On the way, the group meets other survivors, individually and in groups, who are partly peaceful, partly neutral, but also hostile. At the end of the fifth season, the survivors reach the area around Washington, D.C.
Due to their seemingly hopeless situation and the growing skepticism towards strangers, some members have a marked emotional change. This manifests itself through emotional stupefaction and growing willingness for hard-hearted decisions in favor of one's own survival (or that of the group). The permanent zombie threat is thus, as in the comics, more in the background, because there is no incessant "Zombiegesplatter". In the foreground are more the group-internal differences and tensions as well as conflicts with outsiders. The most common contentious issues among the survivors are disagreements over further approaches, fundamental views and moral values, including topics such as suicide, cannibalism, abortion, "preventive killing" of infected and potentially dangerous prisoners, and racism. The focus is on the one hand on the question of how people change when they are taken away from their usual life and they suddenly have to fight for things that they took for granted. On the other hand, it is about the self-definition of people. For the first time in 30,000 years confronted with a group of people that resembles them externally, but not the same species or reproduction community, the Apocalypse survivors wrestle with their idea and defense of what they want to call "human". The author Wayne Yuen therefore discusses in the tense of the Indicative Future ("will it be ...?"): "The Walking Dead is philosophically exciting because, unlike in a two-hour zombie movie, we really find out how it feels in one World lives, which is overrun by zombies. How should we behave each other? How should we divide the work? Without the support of government, law enforcement and a fixed moral concept, are we all really the same? Can we take what we want? Is there still private property? Will life actually be 'evil, brutal and short' (Hobbes) or will it simply be different, with its own problems and troubles coupled with effort and triumphs?"
