In April 2013 the TV station E! That a number of script-based projects are under development, including The Royals. Shakespeare's Hamlet served as inspiration for the story. Two months later the TV station commissioned a pilot sequence. In September 2013, Elizabeth Hurley received the lead role of Queen Helena. A short time later, William Moseley was cast for the male lead role as Prince Liam. Moseley followed Alexandra Park and Haley Lu Richardson.
In early March 2014, E! A first, ten-episode series of The Royals. At the beginning of the shooting in June 2014 in London, Merritt Patterson replaced the role of Richardson. Next to London was also shot at the Blenheim Palace, which serves as a fictional royal palace. In August 2014, a first trailer was released and it was announced that Joan Collins will play the supporting role of the Grand Duchess of Oxford, Helena's mother.
In January 15, 2015, the Television Critics Association Press Tour 2015 announced that the TV series was extended by a second season. The shooting began on June 15, 2015 in London.
The Royals is an American drama drama based on an idea by Mark Schwahn. At the center of the series is a fictional British royal family around Queen Helena (played by Elizabeth Hurley), whose members must also fulfill political functions alongside the representative monarchy. The Royals is the first self-produced series by E !. The first broadcast in the United States took place on 15 March 2015 on E !.
