In the early 1970s, pornography was legalized in the US - a change in American society. Especially in New York, the prudery of the past decades is being replaced by a sexual freedom, which is mainly related to the rise of the porn industry. Times Square becomes the linchpin of the lucrative business of lust, in which twin brothers Vincent and Frankie Martino (James Franco in a dual role) soon establish themselves as central figures. Even the resourceful prostitute Eileen "Candy" Merrell (Maggie Gyllenhaal) quickly finds a foothold in the flourishing industry. But as the decade progresses, cocaine, HIV, and the downturn in the real estate market overshadow the nefarious industry, whose decline is abruptly continuing as it had been before.
Created by HBO, the series was co-developed by George P. Pelecanos and David Simon, who made history with the cult series The Wire. At the beginning of June 2017, a first trailer for the series was released. The eight episodes of the first season were broadcast on HBO from September 10 to October 29, 2017 in the US.  The second episode was first shown on September 10, 2017 as part of the Toronto International Film Festival.
The title of the series refers to the former New York entertainment district in which the film plays, Times Square on 42nd Street in Manhattan. Etymological became forty deuce (42) The Deuce, which is also a name for the devil. In gambling, the word refers to a two when rolling a dice.
In September 2017, HBO announced the production of a second season of the series.
