Frances (Sarah Jessica Parker) and Robert (Thomas Haden Church) have been married for more than 10 years and lead a quiet life in the suburbs of New York with their two children. But her life and especially her relationship is no longer really fulfilling for Frances. One day when she witnesses a fierce quarrel between her friend Diane (Molly Shannon) and her husband Nick (Tracy Letts), she finally makes the decision to change her own life and make a fresh start. With that in mind, she reveals to stunned Robert that she wants a divorce. But that's where the stress really gets going - protracted divorce disputes, loud clashes between the future ex-husband and wife as well as quarrels over the children and friends included.
