The action takes place in Anatolia and Western Asia of the 13th century. The Kayı tribe, one of many Oghuz tribes, is looking for a new settlement site. The tribes are at war with the Mongols, who have gained power in Central Asia. Ertuğrul is the son of Sulaiman Shah, the "Bey" of the Kayı tribe. One day, when hunting with his loyal henchmen, they meet three prisoners who, unsuccessfully, try to flee from Knights of the Knights Templar.
Ertuğrul and his soldiers free the prisoners and bring them to their own tribe. After a while it turns out that the three are the brother, the nephew and the niece of the Seljuk sultan. By their liberation, the Kayı tribe is now also in conflict with the Knights Templar.
On October 27, 2016, the third season of the series began in the Turkish state broadcaster TRT 1. In the third and according to screenwriter and producer Mehmet Bozdag last season is about the conquest of the border areas to the then Byzantine Constantinople. Ertugrul Gazi, in order to achieve this goal, had to part with a large part of his tribe and his two older brothers, Sungur Tekin and Gundogdu, who preferred the plan to return to Central Asia.
