The future of the year 2166 looks bleak for humanity: The merciless, immortal Vandal Savage (Casper Crump) has taken control of the world and exercises it with rigorous severity. Timing researcher Rip Hunter (Arthur Darvill) sees only one way to prevent this sinister development: With his time machine, he travels back in time to assemble a motley troupe of superheroes and villains, the common Savages rise to power prevent it from being too late. The idiosyncratic team includes The Atom (Brandon Routh), White Canary (Caity Lotz), Captain Cold (Wentworth Miller), Heat Wave (Dominic Purcell), Hawkman (Hawk Hentschel), Hawkgirl (Ciara Renée) and Firestorm (Victor Garber / Franz Drameh). Under Hunter's leadership, the very different members have to settle their differences to save the world and become legends.
The series premiered on September 9, 2017 as part of the 42nd Toronto International Film Festival. The first two episodes ran there in the section "Primetime", in which series are shown with serial storytelling. Netflix announced on December 20 that a second season had been ordered, based on satisfactory poll numbers from global users.
As a backdrop for shots inside the cave and some outdoor shots in the forest, the visitor cave Einhornhöhle in southern Harz was selected.
