Elementary is an American crime series by Robert Doherty starring Jonny Lee Miller and Lucy Liu. It is loosely based on characters and motifs of Arthur Conan Doyle's Sherlock Holmes stories, but differs in three essential ways: it plays in the present, in New York instead of in London, and has its origins in the figure of Dr. Ing. John Watson the former surgeon dr. Joan Watson made.
Sherlock Holmes is a former adviser to Scotland Yard. Because of a prolonged heroin addiction, triggered by the death of his ex-girlfriend Irene Adler, he was admitted to a detox clinic in New York City. After the discharge, he is an addiction therapist. Joan Watson aside. She was hired by Holmes' father to make sure Sherlock did not relapse. To keep an eye on Holmes, she moves into his guest room. As long as Holmes can focus on unexplained murders, he has no inclination to relapse into drug addiction. Holmes spends his time as an unpaid NYPD consultant. There he works regularly with Captain Thomas Gregson, whom he already knows from Scotland Yard, where Gregson had been to "9/11". But not only the police, but also private individuals - as far as the case is concerned only enough, Sherlock offers his extraordinary cognitive and combinatorial abilities.
Initially, the relationship between Holmes and Watson is characterized by a lack of trust and misunderstandings. Holmes feels disturbed by Watson's presence in his life, and Watson believes Holmes can relapse at any moment. In the course of time, however, this mistrust is increasingly diminished, also because, in addition to the regular drug tests by Watson, Holmes always conducts voluntary tests or offers them in case of doubt. A friendship is slowly developing, resulting in both developing some interest in the other's private life. So Holmes tries to figure out why Watson quit her job as a surgeon, and Watson tries to find out what drove Holmes into his heroin addiction.
