Lucious Lyon has left behind his criminal background and has become the CEO of the record company Empire Entertaiment. He rules his music empire untouched until he learns that a serious illness will paralyze him. Now the question arises for him which of his three sons will run the company in his place in the future: Hakeem, Jamal or Andre. Lucious favorite is Hakeem, a playboy who shies away from hard work though. The middle son Jamal avoids the limelight and is sensitive, but is also a musical prodigy. Lucious is ashamed of him for being gay. The eldest son, Andre, is already the chief financial officer of the record label. But Lucious thinks he's missing something crucial to run the company completely: charisma. Andre still wants to become the successor and is supported in his project by his wife Rhonda.
